Teens and Medi-Cal Dental: A Pacifica Parent's Guide to HPSM
· Carlmont Dental Care
What HPSM Dental may cover for teens: checkups, sealants, fillings, wisdom teeth questions and more. A guide for Pacifica parents, plus how to ask our Belmont office about availability.
Teens with Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM) Medi-Cal dental coverage can often get exams, cleanings, X-rays, sealants, fillings and emergency care, and members under 21 have a broad set of benefits. The most useful habit is keeping checkups on a regular six-month schedule so small cavities are caught early. Our office takes a limited number of San Mateo County Medi-Cal patients, so call (650) 591-1984 to ask about current availability.
What does HPSM Dental often cover for teenagers?
HPSM lists a wide range of dental services for members up to age 21. Based on its published member information, these often include:
- Exams and cleanings, generally every six months
- X-rays, including a full-mouth set about once every three years, with additional or urgent X-rays when needed
- Fluoride varnish
- Sealants on chewing surfaces, generally once per tooth every three years
- Fillings, root canals and crowns, within listed frequency limits
- Tooth removal, including wisdom teeth, when needed
- Emergency care for pain or injury
- Orthodontics (braces) for children who qualify
Limits and frequencies can change, and some items may not be covered. Benefits and limits change; this is general information, not a guarantee of coverage for your teen. Before treatment, ask the HPSM Dental Unit at 650-616-1522 or check your member materials to confirm what applies to your teen.
Why are teens at higher risk for cavities?
Teenage years bring more independence, and often more sugary snacks, sports drinks, energy drinks and soda. Frequent sipping adds sugar and acid that can wear down enamel. Braces or crowded teeth can also make cleaning harder. Dentists commonly recommend brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and limiting sugary drinks between meals. Sealants add protection on the grooves of back teeth, but they do not replace brushing and flossing.
Do teens need a mouthguard for sports?
Dentists generally recommend a well-fitted mouthguard for contact sports and for activities like skateboarding, where a fall or blow to the face is possible. Research suggests athletes who skip a mouthguard face a notably higher risk of mouth and facial injury. Stock guards tend to be the least protective, while custom-fitted ones are often considered the most protective. Teens' mouths are still changing, so a guard may need replacing more often. HPSM's published list does not mention sports mouthguards, so ask HPSM whether one may be covered before assuming it is. If your teen has a dental injury, emergency care for pain or injury is part of the covered categories. Every teen is different, so a dentist can advise on mouthguard choice and wisdom teeth timing after an exam.
What about wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth do not always cause problems. A dentist may review X-rays and watch how they develop over several checkups before recommending removal, especially if there is not enough room for them. Wisdom teeth are a common question for families of older teens. HPSM lists tooth removal, including wisdom teeth, among services that may be covered, so ask HPSM about any requirements before scheduling. Every teen is different, so a dentist can advise on wisdom teeth timing after an exam.
How do I use the benefit from Pacifica?
If you live in Linda Mar, Sharp Park or Rockaway Beach, you can learn more about Medi-Cal dental care through HPSM, and call to ask about current availability. The drive from Pacifica to our Belmont office is roughly 30 minutes depending on traffic, so a morning or after-school visit is worth planning around. Bring your teen's HPSM member card (and any other insurance cards) and confirm with the HPSM Dental Unit at 650-616-1522 which card to present. Also bring a photo ID for a parent or guardian, and a list of any medications or health conditions your teen has. Call first, because availability is limited.
Keeping teens on schedule
Teens are busy with school, practice and jobs, so checkups slip. A few habits help:
- Book the next visit before leaving the office.
- Pick appointment times around sports seasons and exams.
- Add the six-month date to a family calendar.
- Let your teen help own the routine, from brushing to wearing the mouthguard.

★★★★★“Took my kid to see Dr. Jiang today because his baby tooth wouldn’t fall out, and the new one was already coming in. He was super nervous, but Dr. Jiang was so patient and kind. They even had cartoons for him to watch! In no time at all, the tooth was out—painless! My son said it didn’t hurt at all. Awesome experience! Highly recommend Carlmont Dental!”
