Medi-Cal Dental from Pescadero and La Honda: Making the Trip Count
· Carlmont Dental Care
HPSM members on the south coast can plan a dental visit that covers a lot in one trip. Here's what Medi-Cal dental generally includes, what to bring, and how to plan for urgent problems.
HPSM Medi-Cal generally covers routine dental care, fillings, and emergency care, though limits apply. If you have HPSM Medi-Cal and live on the San Mateo County coast, our office takes a limited number of Medi-Cal patients, so call (650) 591-1984 to ask about availability before you make the drive. With a bit of planning, one visit can cover a lot, and good home care can keep you from needing extra trips.
What does Medi-Cal dental generally cover?
Medi-Cal dental benefits fall into a few broad groups. Preventive care usually includes exams, cleanings, and X-rays. Restorative care includes fillings and other treatment needed to keep a tooth healthy. Emergency care is generally covered for pain or injury, subject to plan rules. Coverage for other treatment depends on your plan and clinical need. Ask HPSM or our office.
The details vary: how often you can get certain services, annual limits, and whether more advanced treatment may be covered. Before you plan a visit, ask the HPSM Dental Unit at 650-616-1522 or check your member materials. If you're unsure whether something is covered, ask before the appointment, not at the front desk after a long drive.
Medi-Cal dental benefits can change for some members. Call HPSM or the San Mateo County Human Services Agency to confirm your current coverage. If you need care, it makes sense to schedule it sooner rather than later.
How do you get an HPSM dental visit if you live in Pescadero or La Honda?
We see patients from Pescadero, La Honda, San Gregorio, and Loma Mar who have HPSM coverage. We're at 2100 Carlmont Drive, Suite 8, in Belmont. The drive can take roughly 45 to 60 minutes or more depending on traffic, whether you come over Highway 92 from Highway 1 or take Highway 84 through La Honda. That's a real commitment of time and gas, so it helps to make each visit count. You can read more about Medi-Cal dental care through HPSM on our site.
A few steps make the trip smoother:
- Call first. Ask whether we're currently seeing new HPSM patients, and don't assume an appointment is available.
- Tell us everything you need. If several family members need exams, ask whether visits can be scheduled back to back or on the same day.
- Mention pain or a broken tooth. Say so when you call so the team can decide how to schedule you.
- Ask what the visit will include. Exams, X-rays, and cleanings are often covered, and some needed treatment may be possible at the same visit or a follow-up.
What should you bring to the appointment?
- Your HPSM member card and a photo ID. Call to confirm what else you need.
- A list of your medications and any health conditions, including allergies.
- Any recent dental X-rays or records, if you have them from a previous dentist.
- A list of questions or symptoms, like which tooth hurts and when.
Arriving a few minutes early helps with paperwork, especially if you're coming from the coast and the drive is unpredictable.
How do you keep your teeth healthy between visits?
When the nearest appointment is an hour away, daily habits matter more. Dentists generally recommend brushing twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, and cleaning between teeth once a day with floss or small interdental brushes. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks, especially sipping them over long periods, lowers the risk of cavities. For children, ask a dentist when to start fluoride toothpaste and how much to use.
If a filling has come out or a tooth is sensitive, don't wait for it to become an emergency. Small problems are often easier to treat than large ones, and catching one early can save you a second long drive.
What should you do about a dental emergency from the coast?
Plan ahead before something happens. Keep our number, (650) 591-1984, and your HPSM card somewhere easy to find. For severe pain, swelling, or injury, call our office promptly so the team can advise you. If you have swelling that spreads to your face or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, or heavy bleeding that won't stop, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. These can be serious, and they should not wait for a dental appointment.
For a knocked-out permanent tooth, dentists generally advise handling it by the crown, not the root, and getting to a dentist as quickly as you can, ideally within the hour. Don't scrub it. Keep it moist in milk or saline. Never try to reinsert a baby tooth. Call a dentist or go to an ER immediately. Calling ahead helps us prepare for you.
