Dental X-Rays and Exams on HPSM Medi-Cal: Burlingame Guide

Dental X-Rays and Exams on HPSM Medi-Cal: Burlingame Guide

· Carlmont Dental Care

Why dentists take X-rays, how often they're needed, whether they're safe, and how exams catch problems early for Burlingame patients with HPSM Medi-Cal dental.

Dentists take X-rays because many problems, like cavities between teeth, bone loss, and infection at the root, can't be seen by looking in the mouth alone. How often you need them depends on your own risk and findings, not a fixed calendar. HPSM Medi-Cal dental generally covers exams, cleanings, and X-rays as preventive care, and Burlingame members can call our Belmont office to ask about availability.

Why do dentists take X-rays at all?

A visual exam shows the surfaces of your teeth and gums. X-rays show what's hidden: decay that starts between teeth or under an old filling, bone changes around the teeth, infection near a root, and teeth that haven't come in yet. Catching these early usually means a smaller, simpler fix, and sometimes the chance to stop a problem before it causes pain.

Different images answer different questions. A dentist will typically use these types:

  • Bitewing images to look for decay between back teeth and check bone levels.
  • Periapical images to look at a tooth from crown to root tip, often when there's pain or a suspected infection.
  • Panoramic images for a wide view of the jaws, wisdom teeth, and developing teeth in children and teens.

How often are X-rays really needed?

Current professional guidance says imaging should be ordered only when it is clinically necessary, after a dentist reviews your history, prior images, and a hands-on exam. There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. Someone with frequent cavities or gum disease may need images more often than someone with a stable, healthy mouth. Children and young adults are also evaluated individually, with the aim of keeping exposure low.

Medi-Cal plans also set their own limits. HPSM's published information lists a full-mouth set of X-rays as covered about once every three years, with urgent X-rays covered as needed, and exams once a year for adults and about every six months for children and teens. Limits can change, so confirm current details with the HPSM Dental Unit at 650-616-1522 or in your member materials.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Dental X-rays use very small amounts of radiation, and some single images deliver less than the natural background radiation you absorb in an ordinary day. Dentists follow the principle of keeping exposure as low as reasonably achievable, using only the images that will change a diagnosis or treatment decision. Updated professional guidance no longer treats thyroid and abdominal shielding as routine, though you can always ask your dental team about their approach. If you are pregnant or think you might be, tell the team before any imaging.

How exams find problems early under your Medi-Cal benefit

A routine exam is more than a quick look. A dentist will typically check your teeth for decay, your gums for signs of inflammation or bone loss, your bite, and your soft tissues, including the tongue and cheeks, for anything unusual. X-rays fill in the picture. Together they let your dentist spot a small cavity before it needs a larger filling, or notice gum disease while it can still be managed.

Preventive care of this kind, along with fillings and other needed treatment, and emergency care for pain or injury, is what Medi-Cal dental care through HPSM is designed to cover. Which advanced treatments are covered, and how often, varies, so ask HPSM before you assume.

What Burlingame members should know

We hear from many Burlingame families, from the Burlingame Avenue area to Ray Park and Burlingame Hills, who want a dentist close by with the HPSM benefit. Our office at 2100 Carlmont Drive, Suite 8, Belmont is about 12 to 15 minutes south of Burlingame via Highway 101 or El Camino Real.

We accept Medi-Cal dental through Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM Dental) as an HPSM-partnered provider, but we take a limited number of Medi-Cal patients from San Mateo County. Please call (650) 591-1984 to ask about current availability before assuming you can be scheduled. When you come in, bring:

  • Your HPSM member card, which can often be used at the visit
  • A photo ID
  • A list of your medications and any health conditions
  • Any recent X-rays from a previous dentist, if you have them

Bringing earlier images can sometimes help avoid repeating them.

Common questions about dental X-rays and HPSM

Q: Will I need X-rays at my first visit?

Often a dentist will want a baseline set, unless you have recent images from another office. It depends on your history and what the exam finds.

Q: Can I refuse X-rays?

You can always ask questions and discuss concerns. Without images, a dentist may not be able to detect hidden problems, so it helps to talk through the trade-offs together.

Q: Are urgent X-rays covered if I have tooth pain?

HPSM information indicates urgent X-rays are covered as needed and emergency care for pain or injury is covered, but confirm specifics with HPSM at 650-616-1522.

Q: Will I get a bill for covered preventive care?

Unless your Medi-Cal has a share of cost, covered services generally shouldn't be billed to you. Ask HPSM or our office if anything is unclear.

From our patients

★★★★★

“I was referred by my friend and this is my third time here for the cleaning. This time, my dental hygienist is Lu Lin. She is very professional and full of patience, answered all of my questions. I always grind teeth at night and am not sure if this will cause the issue in the future. They provided suggestions and make the plan for me.”
